Dangers of Automation for the IT Industry

3 dangers of automation that may trigger IT industry

The future will be automated and augmented which is why some roles are going to be completely redundant. As per the Hindu business line, almost 40% of the workforce will be redundant in the coming 3 years.

The greatest trouble is for the lower and middle-class income workers in which the majority of the work is repetitive. These roles will become supervisory and distributed in the future. Many complicated tasks that are considered difficult once to automate are already being performed by machines.

We cannot expect full automation to be the best for our businesses for the purposes of log processing, notifications, and monitoring data, etc. This is because of the 3 dangers of automation that may trigger the IT industry.

Security

The first and foremost danger that might occur after the automation is security. Misuse of personal information and data breaches within the organizations is a growing concern nowadays. The reason is—complete automation would make it difficult for people to interfere when needed. Imagine a fully automated system that doesn’t have the safeguards at the correct place and treats every sensitive data in the same manner as any other usual data. This can cause a risk to the enterprise and also subject to legal action. Hence, the primary focus should be on the security perspective by automating only the right things instead of everything.

Complexity

Though automated processes have obviously made our work easier and help us in focusing on relevant and significant tasks only. But human interaction is still a necessary part of leveraging the system integrations correctly. We must use automation as a way of augmenting the decision-making process rather than a way to eliminate it completely. Because sometimes, human intervention is required to determine which options work the best before processing the task.

High risks

We can eliminate the disaster recovery efforts because of the automation process. For instance -- the automated system can work best as a way to quickly notify the chain of command and send an alert call to the technicians when the problem encounters, along with some suggestions for alternatives also if the required team members aren't available at that particular time.

But ultimately, it’s only a human who knows better and can make the final decision about who the best person to contact and whether to bring in emergency resources during the disaster or not to avoid further risks.

Which jobs are at the edge of getting automated in the future?

Different ventures have different estimations regarding the automation of human jobs in the future. As per the Bank of England –15 million jobs may be at high risk whereas as per PWC analysis 30% of UK jobs will be taken away by robots by the year 2030.

We have a sorted list of around 12 out of 700 occupations that have a probability of getting automated in the near future. The research was done by the researchers of Oxford University in 2013. These jobs share a predictable pattern of repetitive tasks that can be easily automated with machine learning algorithms.

Apart from this, there are still some occupations in different sectors which require expertise while performing tasks. Few jobs among them require a level of human interaction which may take many years for computer programmes to replicate.
